Hi! My name is Ann Cafarchio, and I work full time from my home in Pennsylvania apple country as a professional proofreader and scopist. It is such a blessing to have found a job that is perfectly suited to my interests, natural talents, and personality — and that I absolutely love doing!
Word Lover, Researcher
I have always enjoyed reading and all things word-related, be it spelling, vocabulary, or grammar. I even liked to read the dictionary when I was younger. Nowadays, I enjoy receiving Merriam Webster’s Word of the Day in my email and learning new legal vocabulary. My reading material has changed quite a bit as well to grammar blogs, a lot of Morson’s and Margie Wakeman Wells, and of course, legal transcripts. You never know what you’re going to come across in those — things you never knew and some subjects you wish you never had to know about. I love learning new things and researching to find the answers I don’t know. Google is never far away.
Detail-Oriented, Committed to Excellence
I am detail-oriented and focused. Previous jobs I’ve had from lab technician to courthouse researcher have made use of these traits. As a proofreader, I have a keen eye for spotting errors in spelling, grammar, and format. They seem to pop right off the page. If I come across something I’m not sure of, I have to look it up to find the right answer. I dislike it when things are done incorrectly or not the best they could be. I strive for excellence in my work, and it matters to me that something is done right. That’s the only way to do it.
Skilled, Experienced
Completing the course Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice allowed me to gain specialized training to tailor my skills to proofread full time for court reporters since 2017. I completed the scoping course through Internet Scoping School in 2021 to expand my skill set to include Case CATalyst scoping services. I have experience with transcripts of trials, hearings, and depositions, covering a variety of subject matters, including criminal, personal injury, patent infringement, and family law. I make sure to take into account the varying format requirements and personal preferences of different court reporters. I realize that punctuating the spoken word is an art, but the goal is to have a finished transcript that makes sense and is as error-free as possible.
Loves Helping People, Works Well Behind the Scenes
The part that I especially love about being a proofreader and scopist for court reporters is that I am able to use my skills to work behind the scenes to help people. It may sound funny, but I function best as a support person and get a sense of satisfaction from doing something for someone that helps them succeed. That’s good news for you. I’ve done my job well when you look good! I would love to be able to take this task off your hands and free up some time for you.
